Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor passed away on July 26, 2023, at the age of 56. In a statement, her family wrote, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” according to BBC. Her family and friends are inconsolable and have asked for privacy during this extremely trying time. The cause of death has not been disclosed as of this writing.

The diverse performer was praised as a pioneer for women in the pop-rock genre and was noted for her unique style. She won the Rolling Stone Artist of the Year award in 1991, and in 1990 her heartfelt ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U” peaked at the top of music charts all around the world. She was also awarded the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance in the same year for the song “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.”

O’Connor has sparked attention because of her nonconformity and shaven head. During a heated “Saturday Night Live” performance in 1992, she made headlines by shredding up a picture of Pope John Paul II. Her activism didn’t stop with her firm stance against the Catholic Church in the wake of reports of sexual abuse.

Sinéad O’Connor revealed in a 2007 interview on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that her difficult childhood was the beginning of her mental health issues. She said in a “Dr. Phil” episode that her mother, who she described as “running a torture chamber,” had abused her emotionally and sexually. The disturbed teen, who ran away from home at the age of 13, eventually found solace in music. So, she explained to Winfrey, “when I was growing up, there was no such thing as talking to anyone about abuse and what you’ve been through.” “There was, essentially, no such thing as treatment or recovery. So I kind of put everything in music for me.

She claims that the way the media treated her also served as a reflection of this abuse. The urge to appeal to audiences out of fear of criticism is particularly tough for young women in celebrity culture. O’Connor told Winfrey, “I don’t think I was born with bipolar disease; I think it was produced as a result of the abuse I experienced. “I really was getting kicked around, metaphorically speaking, by the media for years, and that didn’t really help in terms of being well or a stable person,” the author said.

Sinéad O’Connor was forthright in discussing her battle with mental illness:-

On “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2007, Sinéad O’Connor disclosed that she had bipolar disorder for many years before receiving a formal diagnosis. The best way I can explain it is that it’s almost like you are a solid wall before you get ill, said O’Connor to Oprah. “It’s almost very difficult to explain when you are the person that suffers from the thing, but the best way I can describe it is that it’s almost like before you get ill, you are a solid wall,” O’Connor said. “And when you’re sick, it feels like the walls are crumbling and all that’s left is one little brick that’s teetering.”

The artist also talked about her battle with depression and suicidal thoughts, which prompted her to make her first attempt at suicide on her 33rd birthday. She was hailed as a generation-defining musician in the 1990s, but her fame did not make her problems disappear.

She said to Oprah that she “was always kind of very anxious and not necessarily able to experience happiness or fun or whatever.” She had despair in the years after her achievement, which “slowly went up and up and up.” O’Connor also said that despite the craziness within her thoughts, her children gave her a sense of “routine” and kept her going.
